I lived in Sunnyside until I was 27.

That's the neighborhood I grew up in. It's where my parents started over after they arrived in the United States as refugees from Vietnam. It's where my older sister became the first person in our family to graduate college. And it's where I learned what kind of lawyer I wanted to be.

I graduated high school in 2007. Then the University of Houston for undergrad in 2011 — marketing and business administration. Then Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern in 2014. Each step was further than my parents could have imagined when they arrived. Each step also kept me close to this city — to its people, its neighborhoods, and the way it actually works.

Why personal injury.

Most areas of law are paid by the hour. Most injured people can't afford an hourly lawyer. So they end up across from insurance adjusters who do this every day for a living, while the injured person has never been in a hospital that wasn't theirs, never read an insurance contract, never thought about how to value a claim.

The insurance company has a team of lawyers. The person who got hurt doesn't. That's the imbalance personal injury law was built to fix.

I picked this work because it runs on contingency — clients only pay if we win. It's one of the few corners of the legal system where someone without resources can still have a real lawyer in their corner. The economics line up with doing right by the people who walk through the door.

And the people who walk through the door look like the people I grew up around. A Vietnamese refugee hurt on the job. A Sunnyside kid hit by a driver who left the scene. A Spanish-speaking father trying to figure out what an insurance adjuster on the phone is actually saying.

That's who I built this firm for.
